Congratulations to the authors, especially to our PhD students Laura Leiskau and Lea Bambach and to our PI Marcel Deponte (Biochemistry).
As the title of the publication suggests, the authors believe to have finally found the long-sought second substrate/reducing agent of the special Prx6-type peroxidases in H2S and have also gained initial insights into how quickly and with which intermediate stages the unusual catalytic cycle of these enzymes proceeds. At this point in time, it could only be speculated about the physiological function, but the reaction could serve to detoxify H2S, regulate redox, and/or form potentially protective persulfides.
